Frequently Asked Questions

What type of wind should I expect?

  • The wind here is a tradewind from the east rarely over 24 knots, but on average around 13-17.
  • These are guidelines.
  • Typically, the months of January through April, July through mid September are good consistant wind months.
  • May, June can be light and tempramental with maybe 50% of days rideable. Sometimes the wind decides to take a week or two off during these months.
  • October through December is the rainy season so it is hard to predict what and which direction the wind may be. Still good wind but may not be for beginers.

What should I bring?

  • Your favorite kiting gear
  • Booties
  • Any medications you may need
  • SCUBA diver certification card - if you are not certified the rates are very reasonable on Roatan
  • A good book or two - hammocks are readily available
  • There are good rums here but if you are very specific on your liquor, you can bring up to 2 liters with you.
  • Sun block
  • Insect repellant - yes the sand flies can be as bad as you may have heard *no aerosol cans on the airplane* Mosquito's usually aren't too bad and reports of malaria on the island are very few over the years, however if you plan to travel to the jungles of the mainland use your own judgment on malaria medications.
  • Sunglasses with a strap to hold them on during a faceplant - it happens to all of us.

What board skills help?

  • Wakeboarding, snowboarding, surfing, windsurfing and skating can all help your board skills to progress. If you have the opportunity in your area visit a cable park, the cable angle is similar to that in kiteboarding.

What are the necessary travel documents?
A valid passport with at least 6 months remaining on it and $30.00 for departure tax for U.S.A. citizens.

What is the Honduran currency?
The Honduran currency is the Lempira. US dollars are accepted everywhere however, you can receive a better exchange rate if you convert your dollars into lempiras and pay for your purchases in lempiras. This being said, many places do list prices in US currency. I suggest you exchange your money at the nearest bank. The national sales tax is a 12% and 10-15% tip is customary, some nicer restaurants and hotels may include this.
